What is exterior stucco repair?

Exterior stucco repair is fixing physical damage to the stucco skin of a building: holes, broken edges, loose sections, and failed old patches. We cut the damaged area back to a clean, square edge where the stucco is still bonded, replace any rusted lath or torn building paper, and rebuild with a scratch coat, a brown coat and a finish coat. Each layer is allowed to set before the next one goes on.
This is the right service for damage you can see and touch. If the problem is a crack, our page on closing stucco cracks for good goes deeper on that.
When do you need exterior stucco repaired?
- A corner has broken off, often near a garage door, driveway or gate.
- Holes are left after removing a satellite dish, light, sign, hose reel or old wiring.
- Stucco near the ground is crumbling, usually where it touches soil, mulch or pavement.
- A section sounds hollow or moves when you press it.
- Stucco around a window, door or roofline is coming apart, or a kickout flashing was never installed.
- An old patch is falling out or shows clearly against the rest of the wall.
Why does exterior stucco break down?

Impact is the simplest cause: a mower, a ladder, a car door, a ball. Fasteners are another. Every screw that went into the wall for a dish or a light is a path for water.
Low walls take a beating here because older stucco was often run right down into the soil. Clay ground holds water against the bottom of the wall for days after a storm, and the stucco wicks it up. On many older homes in Midtown and around the Quapaw Quarter, the original stucco has also simply reached the end of its bond after decades of seasonal movement.
Rooflines are a weak spot too. Where a roof meets a stucco wall and there is no proper kickout flashing, roof runoff dumps straight into the wall during every storm.
What happens if damaged stucco is ignored?
Open stucco lets rain reach the paper and lath behind it. Lath rusts and expands, which pushes off more stucco. Wood framing and sheathing can rot, and insects find their way in. The repair area gets larger every season, and eventually you may be looking at repairing water damage inside the wall rather than a simple patch.
What affects the cost of exterior stucco repair?

- Size and number of damaged areas.
- Condition of the lath and paper under the stucco.
- Location. Corners, arches and trim details take more hand work than flat wall.
- Height and access for second-story or roofline repairs.
- Texture and color. Historic hand-troweled finishes take more time to match.
- Flashing work that has to be added so the damage does not repeat.
Patch it or redo the whole section?
If the damage is isolated and the stucco around it is still bonded, a properly layered patch is the right repair. If tapping shows that large parts of the wall are loose, or if water damage extends beyond the visible area, we will recommend removing and replacing that section, or resurfacing the elevation after repairs so the wall matches.
Questions people ask us
Can you match the stucco on my older house?
We match texture by hand and test the color on site. On very old or painted stucco a perfect match is not always possible, and we will say so up front.
How long does a stucco patch take?
Small repairs often take two visits: one to build the base coats and one, after curing, for the finish.
Do you fix the cause, not just the hole?
Yes. If missing flashing, a sprinkler or soil against the wall caused the damage, we include that fix in the scope.
Can you repair stucco around a new window?
Yes. We tie new stucco into the existing wall and flash it properly so the joint stays dry.
